Allegheny County deputies sent to a home in Garfield had a simple assignment: serve an eviction notice.
Expecting trouble, seven officers were sent.
They knocked on the door of a Broad Street home for a half hour, eventually making their way inside to find what they did not expect. A person wearing full body armor opened fire.
Somehow the deputies were able to avoid being wounded.
A miracle.
Scores of law enforcement officers rushed to the scene, working as a team, escorting vulnerable neighbors to safety, keeping the area secure. Others were trying to stop a heavily armed, mentally unstable person.
Thousands of rounds were fired. Somehow, not one police officer or resident was wounded. Another miracle.
If it were not for the courage of our law enforcers, the carnage would have been unimaginable. They came up big on Wednesday in a difficult, dangerous situation.
It was their finest hour, something we will long be grateful for. We offer our deepest thanks for a job well done.
