PITTSBURGH (93.7 The Fan) – You could see from the smile on his face how special it was for Elandon Roberts to return to the Steelers in August. You could imagine the 180-degree reaction when he was released during cutdown day. Now the veteran linebacker returns, Mike McCarthy confirms Monday Roberts is added to the practice squad.
“I enjoyed him in training camp, I thought he did a nice job,” McCarthy said. “I think timing had a lot to do with his opportunity. We are trying to get better. We are trying to improve the team. He’s a veteran that’s done great things throughout his career.”
“This man just wants to win, you can’t have enough people like that.”
Last year with the Raiders, the 32-year-old Roberts started 16 games for now Steelers defensive coordinator Patrick Graham with 90 tackles. He has 694 tackles over his 10-year NFL career with the Patriots, Dolphins, Steelers, Raiders and if all goes well, the Steelers again.
“I try not to change,” Roberts said in August. “I don’t think I change much. Probably the only thing that changed is I got a little smarter. From a physicality standpoint, I’m always going to be me.”
Roberts played in a couple of Steelers preseason games finishing with nine tackles, seven solo. He overcame injuries to play in 33 games with 147 tackles (92 solo) including 15 tackles for loss in two seasons with the Steelers previously.
