PITTSBURGH (93.7 The Fan) – “I got to be better.”

It was simple, direct, no excuses from Steelers tackle Broderick Jones on Wednesday as he assessed his performance Week One against the Jets.

“Just got to continue to focus in,” Jones said. “I can’t put that on tape. I know that, everybody knows that. We just can’t have that performance again.”

Jones said he’s not sure why the start went that way. He felt like he prepared the right way. He said his mind was in it, he was focused the entire game.

“Just a bad game honestly,” Jones said.

The first-year starter at left tackle said he’s working to improve it all. He called it a game of inches and said it’s about all the small details and little things as he was part of giving up four sacks Sunday. It’s not really a change in mindset this week or change in how he goes about practice or film.

“You just got to continue to prepare the right way and just hope for the best,” Jones said.

The confidence is there, he never lost it. You always want to be perfect in a game, but it’s not going to happen. He understands the significance of his job and also knows that Rodgers is 41-years-old. Jones said he’s not a threat to run, but they still have to give him the time.

“At the end of the day it’s my job to protect Aaron and I didn’t do that, so moving forward throughout the season, I got to do that,” Jones said.

Jones said Rodgers moves on to the next play. He doesn’t focus on anyone’s mistakes, although he will talk to guys on the sidelines. The left tackle said his quarterback admitted to his own mistakes and that it’s a whole collective unit, not just him as to not pile the blame on him. Rodgers even said part of the issue was he was a little slower because his back was a little tight Sunday afternoon.

“I really like Brod,” Rodgers said Wednesday. “I got to know him during training camp. I like what he is about. I like his attitude. He’s a genuinely positive guy.”

“I have confidence in him watching my back.”
