Pitt men’s basketball has announced the return of freshman guard Dior Johnson to the team.

Johnson was reinstated to the program and returned to practice. He is expected to be a redshirt for the rest of the season.

Head coach Jeff Capel said on Wednesday that after talking to athletic director Heather Lyke, the decided to give Johnson “another chance.”

“There’s a process with the university that we have to go through,” Capel told the PM Team on Wednesday, adding he stayed in contact with Johnson since the alleged incident.

Capel also said he spoke with Johnson about being redshirted and they both believe that is the best thing for him moving forward.

Johnson pleaded guilty to two misdemeanors earlier this month after an incident in September. He was charged with two counts of simple assault and strangulation. He is serving a year of prohibition.

A criminal complaint says that he attacked a female victim after she got his phone wet.

He reportedly punched the woman multiple times and attacked her arm with scissors.

The four-star recruit is the highest-rated prospect Capel has been able to sign during his time as head of the program.
