It seems all but certain, barring a good playoff run, that Steeler offensive coordinator Matt Canada won’t be back in 2024.
So, who could and should take over the play calling duties next season?
Pittsburgh Post-Gazette Steelers insider Gerry Dulac suggested a friend of Mike Tomlin, former Raiders coach, Jon Gruden.
Dulac did add it’s “Way too early to speculate.”
Pro Football Talk’s Mike Florio said it would be “a hell of a move.”
Gruden resigned in 2021 after emails were uncovered that showed him using anti-gay and misogynistic language.
Florio points out that Gruden helped the Saints out in the offseason, with former Raider quarterback with New Orleans.
As far as he knows, the Saints didn’t face any blowback from having Gruden part of their staff.
Florio says it would be a “risky move” with the lawsuit pending from Gruden against Commissioner Roger Goodell and the league.
He adds that if anyone can do it though, it would be the Steelers.
“I think the Steelers would have to be really desperate at the offensive coordinator position to take that chance,” said Florio.
He also said there could be fan blowback, but the way Steeler Nation feels about Matt Canada they probably don’t care about Gruden’s emails.
