The playoffs are officially underway and there were some impressive performances during the opening weeks of WPIAL postseason action. And, while the District 7 playoffs got underway, the Pittsburgh City League crowned two champions.

Throughout the rest of the 2021-2022 high school basketball season, KDKA Radio will recognize some of the top boys and girls basketball players from the WPIAL and Pittsburgh City League.

At the end of the season, along with a fan vote, the KDKA Radio high school sports staff will name the winners of the prestigious Super 7 Basketball awards.

This week, we salute a pair of City League champions, plus one of the top girls basketball recruits in the WPIAL and a North Catholic boys standout who had a big night in the KDKA Radio Game of the Week.

Andrew Maddalon, North Catholic

In a game you heard on KDKA Radio, Maddalon shined brightest, scoring 22 points as the Trojans topped Central Valley, 57-42, in the first round of the WPIAL Class 2A Playoffs.

This year, the junior is scoring over 16 points per game for North Catholic.

The Trojans are 18-3 this season and will next face Lincoln Park Wednesday in the Class 4A Quarterfinals.

Logan Golle, Allderdice

Allderdice has had a balanced attack all season. From night to night, different players have stepped up.

But when it mattered most, Golle took over. The sophomore scored 20 points in City League title game, as the Dragons beat Brashear, 60-44, at the Petersen Events Center.

The City League crown is the 16th in Allderdice's history.

 Samaree Perkins, Obama Academy

While Allderdice took the boys City League title, it was Obama Academy who again claimed the girls' crown.

Perkins, a senior, scored 19 points and snagged 15 rebounds in a 58-40 win over Allderdice. Days earlier, she went over 1,000 points in the semifinals.

For Obama Academy, the championship is its fifth in the 11 years since the school opened. Perkins has scored over 16 points per game this year.

Journey Thompson, Peters Township

Thompson has been a force down low for the Indians since her freshman season, and the senior had a strong performance for what will be her final playoff run's first game.

Thompson scored 16 points to lead No. 8 Peters Township to a 57-42 win over Butler in Class 6A's first round Friday.

This season, she has scored over 16 points per game for the Indians, which face Mt. Lebanon in Wednesday's quarterfinals. Thompson is committed to play at Delaware.

Friday night, be sure to tune into 1020-AM and 100.1 FM NewsRadio KDKA for coverage of a WPIAL basketball playoff game. Beginning at 6 p.m. the KDKA Radio team of Dan Zangrilli, Rick Dayton, Mike White, Cale Berger and Ben Tenuta will bring you all of the audio and video content from the week's biggest game!
