Buzzer beaters, monster scoring performances and milestone breaking games highlighted this week's action on the high school basketball hardwood throughout the region.
This season, we will nominate four players (two boys, two girls) to the KDKA Radio Super 7 Basketball Watch List each week. At the end of the year, KDKA Radio will name one player from each WPIAL boys and girls classification, plus the Pittsburgh City League, as the prestigious KDKA Radio Super 7 Player of the Year Award winner.
Here is a look at the four players who had big weeks during Week 7 of our coverage:
Tasso Sfanos, Mars
Sfanos has been putting together a strong season for the Fightin' Planters all year. But his marquee moment came Friday.
With time winding down, Sfanos drained a long 3-pointer at the buzzer, capping a 40-point game in a 73-32 win over North Hills.
The senior guard also scored 19 against Montour in 73-67 win Tuesday.
Mars is 12-5 this year and moved to a game out of first place, behind North Hills, in Section 4-5A.
Meghan Murray, Hampton
The Murray family has a lot to be proud of this season. Brennan Murray has helped the Talbots boys team to a 15-2 record. His sister, Meghan, has paced the girls team.
Tuesday night, Meghan scored 16 points, 11 assists and five rebounds as the Talbots took down rival Mars, 58-53.
The junior is scoring over 20 points per game this season as the Talbots are 12-5 and 6-2 in Section 2-5A.
She has a college offer from Mercyhurst.
Rowan Carmichael, Avonworth
Avonworth has had a bit of an up-and-down season this year, but picked up its biggest win of 2022-23 Friday night.
Carmichael scored 37 points, including four 3-pointers, as the Antelopes handed South Allegheny its first section loss of the season, 63-58. He also had six assists and three steals.
Only a sophomore, Carmichael is scoring over 21 points per game this season, as he tries to get Avonworth back to a second straight WPIAL final.
His father, Hermie, is the head coach of LaRoche's men's basketball program.
Emma Paul, Armstrong
Battling in one of the WPIAL's deepest and most talented sections, Paul has undeniably become a star this year.
On Monday, she dropped in 24 points against North Hills in a 62-27 win.
She followed that Thursday by eclipsing the 1,000 point mark in her career, scoring 14 points against New Castle in a 61-24 victory.
The junior guard is scoring over 17 points per game and is also one of the area's top softball players.
The high school basketball season continues Friday, when Laurel Highlands visits Belle Vernon for a boys basketball showdown. You can hear the game on 100.1 FM and 1020 AM KDKA Radio. And be sure to follow KDKA Radio's social media accounts throughout the night for updates, photos and videos of the action.
