The city of Monessen is planning to honor National Baseball Hall of Famer Josh Gibson, all-time Negro League great this week.
That day while playing for the Homestead Grays against the Memphis Red Sox, Gibson hit the second-longest home run of his career nearby Page Park . He is widely regarded as one of the best hitters in baseball history.
Sean Gibson, great-grandson of Josh Gibson tells Lynne Hayes-Freeland "this is a very big deal" " Thursday at 10 am in Monessen at 165 Donner Ave, there will be a historical marker placed at that site." July 24, 1938, Josh Gibson hit a home run that was 536 feet. The longest home run hit in the course of that era, Sean Gibson said.
The city will be partnering with the MLB, the Pittsburgh Pirates and the Gibson Foundation for a Historical Marker Ceremony in Page Park at 10 a.m. on Thursday, July 22.
