LATROBE (93.7 The Fan) – When asked about players who have looked different, in this case better, than he thought they would be the first name that came to Steelers head coach Mike McCarthy’s mind—quarterback Mason Rudolph.
“I can’t tell you how pleased I am with him,” McCarthy said. “Quarterbacks play awhile in this league, so the experience he’s gained in this league is incredibly valuable to us.”
McCarthy said even though he made some changes to Rudolph’s footwork, he still plowed through that to play well.
“Throws it better than I knew,” McCarthy said. “I think like anything in the quarterback room you really don’t know until to stand next to him. You are out there on the field and see how he throws the ball.”
Honoring a Hall of Famer
When the Monday Night Football theme plays at practice, players have to immediately head to the red zone for goal line drills. It was called the ‘Mojo Moment’ after Austin Powers. Now it’s named after a Steelers legend.
“It’s the ‘Franco Moment’,” McCarthy said. “In honor of Franco Harris and honoring the greatest play in NFL history in the Immaculate Reception, it is now the ‘Franco Moment’.”
McCarthy said he showed the team the Immaculate Reception and told them about the history of the play.
Careful with depth charts
He first depth chart of the season came out Wednesday. It’s been picked apart and analyzed, McCarthy said to watch yourself with that.
“I wouldn’t put a lot of value into the depth chart,” McCarthy said. “That’s (head of Steelers communication) Burt’s (Lauten) depth chart.”
