PITTSBURGH (93.7 The Fan) – Pirates announced Wednesday there were no new findings with Ke’Bryan Hayes wrist injury, however there is no indication as to when he might return.
The favorite for NL Rookie of the Year is stretching with the team and assessing if he can play catch and field ground balls.
There is no timetable for that to occur, the best estimate is that he will start some baseball activities in the coming days.
“We are assessing what he can and can’t do,” said Pirates Director of Sports Medicine Todd Tomczyk. “There will be a similar process (working back up). We won’t do the exact same things that we did before, but there will be some gradual progression into full baseball activities.”
Pirates confirmed the injury occurred on a swing where he hyper-extended the hand and wrist. Tomczyk said was a rare swing angle that caused the injury, however it’s one that can happen in the game. They will make sure he can make that swing before he returns because that swing angle could happen again.
“Overall there were multiple views, by experts, of this hand and wrist,” Tomczyk said. “All agreed on the prognosis, diagnosis and eventually once we get the confidence back in Ke’Bryan. He will be a Pittsburgh Pirate and contributing to the winning team.”
Chad Kuhl
The Pirates right-handed starter has resumed playing catch from the right shoulder discomfort.
“He is making progress,” Tomczyk said.
Kuhl will progress to throwing from 120 feet in the coming days. They will see how the body responds. Next would be to throw a side session and then to live batting practice. No specific dates to announce yet with Kuhl.
