PITTSBURGH (93.7 The Fan) – It’s offensive coordinator leaving to become a college head coach, Ohio State grabbed the Steelers offensive coordinator the last two seasons to hold that job in Columbus. Arthur Smith will become a college OC for the first time in his career according to several reports including NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.
Steelers were 25th in total offense last year, 15th in points per game at 23.4, which is up from 17.9, where the Steelers offense was when Smith took over.
Smith had interviewed to return to the Tennessee Titans as head coach, but ends up back in college where he was a candidate for the head coaching job at his alma mater, North Carolina, a year ago.
The 43-year-old started in college as a graduate assistant with the Tar Heels in 2006 and worked as a quality control coach with Washington and Tennessee before eventually taking over the tight ends in 2016 and then offensive coordinator in 2019 and 20. After he was fired following three years as the Falcons head coach, he spent the last two seasons in Pittsburgh.
