Pitt freshman QB wins ACC weekly honors

Mason Heintschel awarded after 323 yards & 4 TD in 1st college game

PITTSBURGH (93.7 The Fan) – He hit his first 10 passes of his college career, one of those for a touchdown, Monday Pitt quarterback Mason Heintschel was named the ACC Rookie of the Week.

Finding out that week under a veil of secrecy, Heintschel was announced the starter on game day and finished 30-41 for 323 yards and four touchdowns with a quarterback rating of 171.5 in a 48-7 Panthers win over Boston College.

“I think he did a heck of a job,” Narduzzi said. “He got the ball out. We moved the sticks. We got 40 minutes time of possession. I don't know how many three-and-outs we had. We moved the ball. We had the ball in our possession. I thought he delivered the ball. He made good decisions.”

Narduzzi credited the true freshman for his preparation and not turning the ball over. Receiver Kenny Johnson said Heintschel didn’t try to be Superman, just did was he was supposed to do and it led to a conference award after his first game.

“Confident, not arrogant, real confident,” Johnson said of Heintschel. “He’s real focused on the details. He kept us away from negative plays. He played really solid, consistent football all game. I knew he was going to have a game.”

“I’m just glad to walk in here and get a W,” Heintschel said. “It’s important to me that we win games here. Just doing anything I can and doing my job is important to me.”

Heintschel said it’s quickly on to Florida State, assuming he will be the starting quarterback Saturday in Tallahassee at noon on 93.7 The Fan.
