Cleveland.com’s Mary Kay Cabot reports that Mayfield wanted Stefanski to surrender play calling duties to offensive coordinator, and former Pitt quarterback, Alex Van Pelt.

Mayfield is sitting out the final game of the season with surgery to repair a torn labrum.

If things don’t change in Cleveland, Mayfield may not want to return to the Browns and the organization may not even want him.

That’s a big turnaround compared to last April when they picked up his fifth-year option for 2022.

That report, it should be noted, is being disputed by Mayfield himself.

With Mayfield possibly available, who would make a better quarterback for the Steelers next season? Mason Rudolph or Baker Mayfield.

“I would take him in a second,” said Joe Starkey on the Cook and Joe Show Thursday. “I’d rather have another veteran out there, of course it depends on who obviously, but heck yeah give me Baker Mayfield for a year. I’d love to see that happen.”

While Starkey says he doesn’t “love” Mayfield, he says when it comes to the Steelers, beggars can’t be choosers.

“I think Steeler fans, whether they want to admit it or not, would love Baker Mayfield here, I think they would love it,” said Starkey.

While Mayfield struggled in 2021, Starkey believes his injury is a big part of that and he much more talented than Rudolph.

While some callers agreed with Starkey, one rather passionate fan that Joe called “Tenny” instead of Tony would rather take Rudolph.
