With Bill Belichick out in New England, Mike Tomlin is now the longest tenured coach in the NFL.
Belichick was the Patriots Head Coach for 23 years before he and owner Robert Kraft mutually parted ways on Thursday.
Tomlin has 17 years with the Pittsburgh Steelers. Baltimore Ravens coach John Harbaugh is a close second with 16 years and Andy Reid’s 11 years in Kansas City Chiefs is good for third.
Rounding out the top five, Sean McDermott with Buffalo and Sean McVay with the Rams both have seven seasons.
Stop me if you’ve heard this one before, but Tomlin has never had a losing season in Pittsburgh, since he began his career, a record.
He also has been to two Super Bowls, winning one, seven AFC North titles and has made the playoffs in 11 of his 17 years.
The problem is the postseason.
Tomlin is 8-9 in the playoffs; the Steelers haven’t won a playoff game since 2016 and lost their last four.
Of those four, the Steelers have given up 40 points or more.
The Steelers are about 10-point underdogs as they get ready for their latest postseason game, this one Sunday in Buffalo.
Another question that has been floating around is how much longer Tomlin will stay with the Steelers.
His status as longest-tenured coach in the NFL could come to a quick end on Sunday if the Steelers lose.
There have been reports and speculation that Tomlin may want to move on after the season ends.
He could also sign an extension and stay in Pittsburgh for at least a few more year.
According to the reports, the decision is completely up to Tomlin if he re-signs.
Tomlin’s oldest daughter is going to the University of Georgia next year meaning all of his kids are going to be out of high school.
KDKA Radio/93.7 The Fan’s Paul Alexander is hearing, not reporting, that he is hearing Tomlin’s wife wants to move her clothing company into a market outside of Pittsburgh.
