Despite pleas from public health officials for Americans to continue to stay close to home, people are heading to the airport at the highest rates in over a year.
The top 13 busiest travel days since the pandemic began were recorded over the last three weeks and there have been more than one million travelers in the U.S. every day since Mar. 10.
This comes as cases are rising again in 27 states.
1.5 million people passed through TSA checkpoints on Apr. 1. That is more than 12 times the number of people who flew on the same date one year ago, although still below pre-pandemic travel levels.
The CDC updated its travel guidance on Friday morning and now says that it is safe for fully vaccinated people to travel domestically without needed to get tested or quarantine, but the increase in travel comes before the update and coincides with reports of large crowds at popular spring break destinations.
