The fire was reported about 10:25 a.m. Thursday in a first-floor unit of a two-story, garden-style apartment at 11915 W. Kling St., just north of the Ventura (101) Freeway, according to the Los Angeles Fire Department.

Thirty-eight firefighters responded and put the blaze out in 20 minutes, but while conducting their primary search of the affected unit, crews found one person who was "beyond medical help."

That individual, whose age and gender were not immediately available, was pronounced dead at the scene, said LAFD spokeswoman Margaret Stewart.

"Crews prevented the fire from extending to any exposed units, allowing the re-housing of all other residents," Stewart said, adding that LAFD arson investigators were called to the location to determine the cause of the fire, which is standard in such cases.

The Los Angeles County Medical examiner will be tasked with determining who the victim is and their cause of death.
