The roads and airports are expected to be congested on Friday as Southern California residents leave town for the long Memorial Day weekend.

According to the Automobile Club of Southern California, 3.5 million Southern California are expected to travel over Memorial Day weekend. The company said this is not only a 4.7% increase from 2023, but it’s also a travel record for the holiday.

Of those traveling, 2.9 million are expected to be driving.

LAX, on the other hand, is expecting 235,000 passengers on Friday.

Andrea Brackett, one of the many travelers at LAX, told KNX News’ Jon Baird the traffic getting to the airport was crazy.

“Traffic was crazy. Busier than I expected for 6 a.m. coming up here from Long Beach,” she said. “ I didn't think it would be this bad. I actually thought I was sneaking in a little early,”

Another traveler, Alex, told Jon Baird he’s not worries about the planes being packed.

“I've been to Florida so I already see how packed it can be and it's early in the morning so not much to worry about ,” he said.

The top destinations for SoCal residents, according to the Automobile Club of Southern California, is Las Vegas, San Diego, Grand Canyon, Hawaii, and Seattle/Alaska cruises.
