There was a close call at John Wayne in Orange County on Tuesday morning.
A United 737 flight with 168 people on board was on final approach when air traffic control told it to watch out for a Black Hawk military helicopter crossing the flight path.
The captain says they saw it, got a traffic alert, and leveled out.
CBS News Transportation Correspondent Kris Van Cleeve told KNX News 97.1 this is concerning.
“The helicopter and the plane shouldn't have been that close together, and this comes within days of the FAA and Department of Transportation changing the rules for helicopters around airports in part because of a close call at Burbank's airport between a plane and a helicopter,” he said. “So, there are questions that continue to swirl around helicopter traffic, plane traffic, and busy airports.”
This comes days after an Air Canada jet crashed into a truck at LaGuardia Airport, killing two pilots and injuring several others.
