The Riverside County District Attorney's Office announced Friday that a 35-year-old Riverside County man who gunned down his wife's ex-boyfriend in a jealous rage will spend life in prison without the possibility of parole.
Tyler Catlin Borg of Fontana was convicted in June of first-degree murder with a special circumstance of lying in wait and a sentencing enhancement for using a gun to inflict great bodily injury in connection with the 2018 murder of Justin Adrian Kiernan, 31, of San Bernardino.
According to the Riverside D.A.'s office, Borg and his wife had been experiencing domestic issues for much of their three-year marriage. In Dec. 2018, Borg's wife reportedly reconnected with Kiernan, and ex-boyfriend.
The two had not spoken since they broke of their relationship just prior to her marriage to Borg. But prosecutors said the pair expressed interest in rekindling things.
Borg had grown increasingly suspicious of his wife in the days surrounding her reunion with Kiernan. He reportedly said he placed a GPS tracker on her vehicle. When he inquired into her whereabouts on they she reunited with Kiernan, she said she had gone to a local shopping mall. Borg accused her of lying, citing the GPS tracker.
Prosecutors said Borg's wife denied any wrongdoing, and the matter was left unresolved. She and Kiernan continued to exchange text messages, however, wherein they arranged to rendez vous for a sexual encounter in late Dec. 2018.
Borg allegedly discovered the text messages after confiscating his wife's phone. He proceeded to communicate with Kiernan, pretending to be his wife, and lured him to meet near the 7800 block of Virtue Vista Drive in Jurupa Valley on the evening of Dec. 22, 2018.
Borg reportedly told his wife their marriage was over, and drove her to her parents' home, all the while texting with Kiernan as his wife. Unbeknownst to his wife, Borg was armed with a nine millimeter pistol.
After depositing his wife at her parents' home, Borg proceeded to meet Kiernan. Kiernan arrived at the meeting location expecting to find Borg's wife, but instead was confronted by the enraged husband.
According to prosecutors, Borg ran up to Kiernan's blue Kia sedan and fired five shots into the vehicle at close range. One of the bullets struck Kiernan in the upper back, another in the back of his head, killing him.
Borg fled the scene and hid out at his sister's residence in Hemet.
Witnesses identified Borg as the shooter, and sheriff's deputies tracked him down the following morning. He surrendered himself peacefully and was taken into custody.
