MONTEREY PARK, Calif. (KNX) – The Monterey Park Community Healing Fund will offer small financial grants to those who witnessed the mass shooting at the Star Ballroom Dance Studio in January.
Eleven people were killed after a gunman opened fire at the Star Ballroom Dance Studio on Jan. 21. The gunman then went to the Lai Lai Ballroom and Studio in Alhambra, but was disarmed by an employee in the lobby.
Monterey Park City Treasurer Amy Lee, who serves on the fund’s oversight committee, told KNX News that witnesses need some support too.
“We understand that the other fund has been helping with the actual injured victims, but we did find that there was a gap in the victims that were not physically injured but were witnesses to the incident and we feel that they are victims also,” she said.
She said around $65,000 has been raised for the fund so far and that grant amounts will depend on how much money comes in.
“We are still in the process of determining that amount somewhere probably in the $500 to $1000 range if possible,” she said.
Anyone who was present at the ballroom during the shooting is asked to email Ms. Carol Bradford Worley of the California Community Foundation at CBWorley@calfund.org to get an application form that will be submitted for review.
Applications will be received and reviewed through July 31st.
The decision to award the grants will be made by committee members based on the information provided by the applicant, according to a press release.
