A majority of California voters think the state budget deficit is “extremely serious,” according to a UC Berkeley poll.

Gov. Gavin Newsom is expecting a $38 billion deficit, but it could be more. The poll found that 51% of people support budget cuts on government services and about a third of voters want to use the rainy day reserve fund.

Newsom withdrew over $8 billion from the fund to help solve the problem.

Mark DiCamillo, the director of the poll, said they asked voters about the direction that California is headed in.

“57% of California voters now think it's off on the wrong track, 33% feel it's in the right direction,” he said. “And when you compare that to prior measures, it's a little more negative than it's been in any year since you'd have to go back to 2012 to get a measure that was more negative than that.”

Newsom’s approval rating is 46%.
