The City Council Wednesday approved renaming the intersection of 1st and Lorena streets in Boyle Heights to honor Cinco de Mayo.

The council voted 13-0 to declare the intersection "La Plaza de Cinco de Mayo," with Councilmen Bob Blumenfield and John Lee absent during the vote. Councilman Kevin de León introduced the motion earlier this year.

According to the motion, Cinco de Mayo commemorates Mexico's history in the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862, and also serves as a celebration of the Chicano and broader Latino community in Los Angeles.

Cinco de Mayo has been celebrated in California since 1863.

In the 1960s, activists from the Chicano movement "recognized a synergy between their own struggle for civil rights and the victory of the Mexican people against European invaders, and adopted this date as Hispanic Heritage Month," the motion states.

"Cinco de Mayo is a celebration of Latino culture enjoyed by people of all creeds and backgrounds," according to the motion.

The Department of Transportation will be tasked with erecting permanent signs at the intersection on a date to be determined by de León's office.
