Hundreds of Los Angeles firefighters are getting the chance to have complimentary lung cancer screenings.
On Tuesday, Radiology firm RadNet set up mobile CT scanners at the Frank Hotchkin Training Center at Elysian Park.
Norman Hames, president and CEO of RadNet, said the company views the opportunity to provide care for firefighters as a way to pay back something to those who put their lives on the line for the rest of us.
“They're exposed to carcinogens and other hazardous materials that could potentially have long-lasting health consequences,” he told KNX News’ Pete Demetriou. “And we're trying to screen these firefighters to help them protect, number one, their lungs and their bodies, and number two, that if we do see anything, they get the follow-up care necessary at Cedars-Sinai so that they can be followed and tracked and they can maintain their health.”
The goal is to scan 75 firefighters on Tuesday, and over the next two months, they're hoping to scan over 750 firefighters for cancer.
