In an exclusive interview with KNX News’ Craig Fiegener, Mayor Karen Bass called the break-in at her home early Sunday morning “very shocking.”

“The individual that broke into the house, I have no idea who this individual is,” she said. “I've not seen a photograph.”

Bass was asleep when a man entered the Getty residence through the glass door. He allegedly called out for the mayor but didn’t find her. He was arrested shortly after.

Although Bass was unharmed, she said the whole thing shook her.

“Anytime you experience something like that, it's very scary. You're worried about your safety, whether you're gonna make it,” she said. “And right now we're, in my opinion, experiencing a spike of random violence of people being, walking down the street and being attacked. And so, we go through these spikes that settle down a little bit and then it comes back.”

This, she said, is why she’s focused on recruiting more officers.

“I, in spite of going through an experience like this, I am very clear that my job is to keep Angelenos safe and to continue on with the business of the city, and regardless of what is happening to me personally, I will continue to do my job,” she said.

Ephraim Hunter, the man accused of breaking into Bass’ home, was charged with first-degree residential burglary and vandalism of $400 or more in damage or destruction of property. The 29-year-old is being held on $100,000 bail.
