It’s official: Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz has signed legislation legalizing recreational marijuana in the state starting on Aug. 1, making Minnesota the 23rd state to do so.
During the signing, Walz talked about prohibition, which he says has not worked in the state.
“Turning your back and pretending a problem doesn’t exist, and for those who bring up what about this, what about that, all those things are happening right now. What this is meant to do, is try to reduce those facts, to reduce those chances, and to make cannabis and adult-use cannabis safe and legal in Minnesota,” Walz said.
One of the biggest champions for legal marijuana is former Minnesota Governor Jesse Ventura, who was on hand for the bill signing.
“It’s very wonderful to see a dream of yours over 20 years ago finally happen today, and I’m still alive to see it,” Ventura said as those present laughed.
Ventura has been open about his wife Terry’s struggle with chronic seizures and how cannabis has helped her manage them. He’s been pushing for legalization since he took office in 1999.
