A new housing project in East Los Angeles is highlighting a growing push to build more homes near transit across L.A.
On Thursday, the Santa Monica and Vermont Apartments opened, offering affordable housing for low-income households. The building has 187 units and is right next to the Vermont/Santa Monica Metro station
“This project is, you know, a birth or a rebirth for many,” one official said, adding it took eight years to make. “There are over 300 residents who live in this building. For so many of them, it's really been a second chance.”
For the families who live in the building, this is life-changing.
“My children now have their own rooms, and we all sleep peacefully,” one woman said. “For the first time in a long time, there's a sense of calm and security.”
Metro officials say they’re working to build around 10,000 housing units right next to public transit.
