LOS ANGELES (KNX) — “The people of Los Angeles deserve better,” newly elected L.A. City Council President Paul Krekorian declared on KNX News on Wednesday.
“They deserve to be able to have confidence in their elected officials and that’s gonna be my first order of business,” he continued.
Krekorian, who received a unanimous vote from City Council on Tuesday, was selected as the fallout from leaked racist audio recordings continues reverberating through City Hall. A recorded conversation between then-council president Nury Martinez, councilmembers Kevin de Leon and Gil Cedillo, and labor union president Ron Herrera included racist comments directed at the Black, Jewish, and Oaxacan communities, in addition to anti-LGBTQ rhetoric.
While Martinez stepped, first as council president and days later from her council seat, de Leon and Cedillo have not. Krekorian said he has spoken to Cedillo but not de Leon and continues to pressure both to quit their posts so the city's government can move forward.
“This is one of the reasons that it’s important for these two members to resign," he explained. "We are right now on a razor’s edge every meeting with whether or not we can maintain decorum.”
Krekorian said city council has voted to start the process of putting a measure on the ballot that would create independent redistricting commission, as well as investigating a measure increasing the number of council districts in the city.
He told KNX News he refuses to let the city become an “embarrassment.” However, the staunchest critics argue that may too late.
“One of the reasons that I’ve raised my hand and been willing to take this task this on is exactly because I’m unwilling to allow the city council of the city of Los Angeles to be an embarrassment.”
