On Tuesday, Senator Adam Schiff called out the high cost of gas and announced his plans to introduce legislation to bring about a windfall profits tax on oil companies.
“So that when oil companies make record profits, a portion of those profits goes back to the American people in a way that will help stimulate our economy,” he said.
Schiff spoke at the Chevron gas station on Alameda St. in downtown Los Angeles, where he blamed the high cost of gas on the war in Iran and oil companies.
“They are gouging consumers; they're taking advantage of this crisis and this war of choice to gouge consumers,” he continued.
He also said he plans to introduce legislation that would require the DOJ to investigate oil companies for price gouging.
“We'll see whether the president and my Republican colleagues are willing to put their money where their mouth is, or rather the oil company profits where their mouth is,” Schiff said.
Last week, President Trump said on Truth Social that he told the DOJ to investigate big oil companies because they “are not dropping their price at the pump commensurate with the sharply lower prices they are paying for Oil [sic].”
