LONG BEACH, Calif. (KNX) – A shooting suspect was hospitalized after he was shot by a Long Beach officer near the Acura Grand Prix on Sunday.

Around 4:45 p.m., officers responded to Third Street and Elm Avenue following a report of gunshots, according to the Long Beach Police Department

An officer spotted the suspect near Ocean Boulevard and Elm Avenue. Police said the suspect spotted the officer and fired at him, but that the officer fired back and injured the suspect.

The suspect was hospitalized with a “non-life-threatening gunshot wound to the upper body.” No other injuries were reported.

A firearm was recovered at the scene.

“The officer was equipped with a body-worn camera (BWC), however, the BWC was not activated until after the officer-involved shooting occurred,” the department said. “LBPD is in the process of reviewing the footage and will make that available to the public as soon as possible.”

One witness told KNX News said he was walking his dog when the shooting occurred.

“I was shocked, I really was, you know,” he said. “It was after such a nice weekend and then something like that happens and so close to home.”

Police asked attendees at the Acura Grand Prix to void the Green Gate area as police investigated, KCAL reported.

The department noted the suspect could be involved with two other shootings that occurred that day. The first one occurred just after 1 p.m. in the 600 block of Ocean Boulevard. The second happened at 2:58 p.m. in the 700 block of Atlantic Avenue. While no injuries were reported in the first shooting, police said a man sustained non-life-threatening injuries in the second shooting.

Anyone with any information about the shootings was asked to contact Homicide Detectives Donald Collier or Chasen Contreras at 562-570-7244 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
