A new study released Monday in the scientific journal JAMA Neurology showed that nearly a third of elderly Americans were dealing with mental deterioration as of 2016.
Targeting retirement-age senior citizens, the research showed that 10% of respondents had dementia.
Meanwhile, another 22% of Americans aged 65 and above were at the very least dealing with what is classified as mild cognitive impairment (MCI).
The study also uncovered what it classified as a “disproportionate burden” of MCI and dementia among Black and Hispanic adults.
That disproportionality also crossed over to senior citizens with lower education. However, sex had no bearing on the outcome.
The study included 3,496 American individuals at the age of 65 or above.
