CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Chicago-based United Airlines went big Tuesday. Officials placed a multi-billion dollar order for up to 300 new planes.

The first order is an historic one according to United --- 100 new Boeing 787 Dream-liners, with the option to purchase 100 more of the widebody jets.

United is also buying 100 Boeing 737 Max airplanes for domestic flights.

"This order solves for our current widebody replacement needs in a more fuel-efficient and cost-efficient way, while also giving our customers a best-in-class experience," said Gerry Laderman, United's EVP and Chief Financial Officer.

The airline said the Boeing order alone will create 2,600 new jobs for pilots, flight attendants, ground workers, and technicians next year in the Chicago area.

United also said it's looking to improve fuel efficiency, expand international service, and replace aging aircraft over the next decade.
