On Saturday, a woman who is believed to have had an interaction with a grizzly bear on a trail west of Yellowstone National Park was found dead in Montana, state officials shared.

The Montana Department of Fish, Wildlife and Parks shared Sunday that the woman was found deceased “following an apparent bear encounter.”

The woman’s body was located in West Yellowstone, a town just west of the national park, and grizzly bear tracks were found at the scene.

Rangers have since issued an emergency closure of the area where the woman was found, as it is popular among hikers, and while they investigate the grizzly attack to determine whether or not it was ongoing.

While the woman’s death is believed to have been related to the encounter with the bear, the officials clarified that her cause of death has not yet been confirmed.

The department shared in a release last week that visitors should be on the lookout for grizzly bears, as there has been an increase in sightings throughout the state. The release noted they were spotted “particularly in areas between the Northern Continental Divide and the Great Yellowstone ecosystems.”

Those camping and visiting the area of the state are asked to carry bear spray and store their food while outside and tend to their garbage.
