On October 2, 1970 the Shockers left for Logan, Utah, where they would play Utah State the following day. The game never took place. One of two chartered planes crashed west of Denver, Colorado. On the aircraft, 31 people died and 9 people survived. Gus was the other plane and survived the catastrophic day.

Grebe later worked at what is now KWCH TV Wichita thru 1979. Gus' career also had him in Kansas City where he did pre and post game shows for the Chiefs. After moving back to California in the 80s he got into real estate.
