The CHP has revealed the likely culprit behind a massive sinkhole that has caused Gilman Springs Road to be closed in both directions between the 60 and Highway 79 for the past couple of days: a squirrel.
A private contractor was hired for the repair, during which they discovered that ground squirrels had burrowed under the roadway, and with the recent rains, water began to flow into the squirrel den and eventually out the other side of the road.
CHP anticipates that Gilman Springs Road will be fully open early Thursday morning, but also noted, "Bad squirrel."
