5 players you forgot played for the Houston Texans

By Tim Kelly, Audacy Sports

The Houston Texans only entered the National Football League in 2002, but they've packed quite a bit of drama into their first 19 seasons.

From Bill O'Brien to Deshaun Watson to Jack Easterby, all the negative attention that the Texans have received over the past few years can make you forget about much that happened to the franchise in their first 15 or so years in the NFL.

With that in mind, we're willing to bet that you may have forgotten that these five notable players had brief stints with the Houston Texans.

Ahman Green

One of the great running backs in Green Bay Packers history, Green ran for 8,322 yards and 54 touchdowns in eight seasons as Brett Favre's halfback. But by the time that the Texans signed Green to a four-year/$23 million deal ahead of the 2007 season, he was over the hill. In two seasons with the Texans, Green played in just 14 games, averaging 3.8 yards per carry. After being released by the Texans, Green returned to the Packers for 2009, getting 41 carries in what turned out to be. his final NFL season.

Rex Grossman

Grossman famously - or perhaps infamously, depending on your perspective - was the quarterback for the 2006 Chicago Bears team that went 13-3 and reached the Super Bowl because of a dominant defense and special teams star Devin Hester. Three years after Grossman struggled in a Super Bowl XLI loss to Peyton Manning and the Indianapolis Colts, the Florida product made less than $1 million to back up Matt Schaub in Houston. In his lone season with the Texans, Grossman had just nine pass attempts, one of which was intercepted.

Jake Delhomme

Jake Delhomme

A former Pro Bowler that helped to lead the Carolina Panthers to an appearance in Super Bowl XXXVIII, Delhomme may very well be the most forgettable Texan on this list. The 2011 Texans were hit hard by injuries at the quarterback position, which forced them to sign Delhomme for the final few weeks of the season to back up T.J. Yates. In his age-36 season, Delhomme did appear in one game, completing 18 of 28 pass attempts for 211 yards and a touchdown in the team's Week 17 loss to the Tennessee Titans. That proved to be Delhomme's final action in the NFL.

Devon Still

Devon Still

A second-round pick of out Penn State in 2012, Still became known for his touching support of his young daughter Leah as she battled cancer. Still spent three seasons with the Cincinnati Bengals before not playing in the league in 2015. He returned for what turned out to be his final NFL action in 2016 with the Texans, recording three combined tackles in three games with the team. Though Leah was given 50/50 odds on survival when she was five, we're happy to report that she celebrated "six years in remission and one year cancer free" earlier this year.

Taylor Heinicke

Taylor Heinicke

Heinicke will compete in 2021 with Ryan Fitzpatrick to start for the Washington Football Team. Before becoming a cult hero in the nation's capital, Heinicke was an undrafted rookie out of Old Dominion that didn't get a shot to be on an active NFL roster until 2017, his third year out of school. On a team that had games started by T.J. Yates, Tom Savage and Deshaun Watson, Heinicke was promoted from the practice squad in late November, and was the backup quarterback for three games in December. Heinicke completed his first NFL pass attempt for 10 yards, but his chance to play in the team's Week 15 loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers was cut short by him being concussed. If Heinicke proves to have staying power in the NFL, his one-pass stint with the Texans will be part of a pretty incredible story.
