ST. LOUIS (KMOX) - The GoFundMe account says Rev. Demetrius L. Stewart was a man with a "passion" for helping others and it looks like he'll be able to continue that even after his death.
A scholarship fund set up in his name has already raised more than $22,000 of a $50,000 goal. He was shot and killed when leaving Tropicana Lanes bowling alley in Richmond Heights. Police say he was an innocent bystander, after going on a date with his wife and other couples, last week.
Police say they were in their car Friday when a fight involving a group of people the Stewarts didn't know spilled onto the parking lot.
Stewart, 45, was a minister at Westside Missionary Baptist Church in St. Louis, a "very devoted husband" of 20 years and father of two teenage children.
The GoFundMe page says 100-percent of the money raised with be placed in a separate bank account to be given in the form of scholarships to high school students. It will be called the Demetrius L. Stewart Memorial Scholarship.
The visitation and funeral for Demetrius Stewart will be held this friday at Westside Missionary Baptist Church at 4675 Page Blvd where he was an associate minister. The visitation is from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. and the funeral will be held at noon. Stewart was a longtime employee at the VA and an ordained minister.
