ST. LOUIS (KMOX) - There are currently 70 shelter dogs serving as detection dogs for police and schools across the country. One of those is a 2-year-old black and white mutt Jet.
Jet works with Officer Kyle Walters in New Haven, Missouri.
On Dec. 30, the K-9 unit at the New Haven Police Department was requested by Highway Patrol on east bound I-44 west of Highway 47.
Jet alerted authorities and they searched the car finding 25 pounds of marijuana and 8 kilos of cocaine.
Thanks to a grant from the Animal Farm Foundation, Jet went through a free 10-week training to sniff out drugs, explosives, and weapons.
The dogs are selected by shelters to be donated to the program based on their traits.
Typically, a pure bread detection dog can cost up to $20,000.
