ST. LOUIS (KMOX) - For the first time this year, the St. Louis Cardinals and KMOX broadcasters are taking their show on the road. When you listen to KMOX this weekend for the series vs the Chicago Cubs, the crew will be calling the game from the opposing team's ballpark.

The Cardinals are one of only a handful of MLB teams currently traveling its radio crews.

Due to COVID-19 restrictions across Major League Baseball, broadcasters were banned from traveling to and calling games from inside the road team's ballpark. So, they stayed home and watched games on TV like the rest of us. Well, actually, they were at Busch Stadium and had a lot more screens in front of them than you or I.

This three-game series at Wrigley Field will be the first time for the broadcast team of John Rooney, Rick Horton and Jim Jackson to call an away game and actually be able to see the whole field for themselves since spring training in 2020.

"We're excited about it," Rooney says. "And hopefully on the road for the rest of the season. We need to be there so we can tell the fans what's going on and we're not at the mercy of pushing our nose against the screen to see everything we need to give the fans the game."

The KMOX/Cardinals radio crew is approved to travel to Chicago this weekend and for the road trip to Atlanta and Detroit on June 17-23.

The series begins at 1:20 p.m. on Friday.

You can listen to them call the game on KMOX by tuning to 1120 AM or 98.7 FM, or listen on the Audacy App, if you are within the St. Louis listening area.
