ST. LOUIS (KMOX) - Because it's never too soon to look at possible trade deadline deals, the latest report by an MLB insider says the St. Louis Cardinals are the "perfect fit" to trade for starting pitcher Max Scherzer of the Washington Nationals. But they may have to give up their top position player prospect.

Some have been saying for months now that the hometown kid, Scherzer, has been destined to come to the Cardinals. USA Today baseball columnist Bob Nightengale has been one of them. In a new report, he has the three-time Cy Young winner as the best available starting pitcher this year and mentions the Cardinals as his likely destination.

But Scherzer, who is leading the National League in strikeouts (104) and has a 2.22 ERA, won't be cheap. It may mean, Nightengale writes, parting ways with a prospect that has been all but publicly deemed untouchable by St. Louis in recent years: Nolan Gorman.

St. Louis "could easily package top third-base prospect Nolan Gorman," Nightengale writes.

The 21-year-old third baseman was drafted No. 19 overall by St. Louis in 2018. This year, he was was named the fourth-best prospect at third base in all of baseball by Baseball America.

With the acquisition of Nolan Arenado, who may agree to play the remainder of his contract in St. Louis through 2027, Gorman's future is uncertain. The prospect was taking reps at second base in spring training and has played eight games there for Double-A Springfield this season.

Maybe Arenado's presence makes Gorman more disposable. We'll see.
