VALLEY PARK, Mo. (KMOX) - A large sinkhole has opened up at the bottom of a lake in St. Louis County's Lone Elk Park. Photos of the between 8-10 foot-wide hole and half-empty lake have gone viral.
Park officials say tens of thousands of gallons of water in the man-made lake's level have gone down the hole that opened up on Sunday.
This is the second time since 2016 that the lake has been drained by a sinkhole. It happened in the same area as this one and was about the same size.
Park officials had concrete slurry poured in the 2016 hole to patch it.
County officials are working to get a hydraulic engineer to come out to take a look, but the fix might be the same as last time – pour in cement and debris and hope it holds. They are also working to put out signs to warn people to stay away from the hole.
The water that disappeared from the lake has come up in the nearby Castlewood State Park, according to the report.
It's possible the sinkhole could have been caused by a small earthquake that hit Eureka last month.
