A bill in the Illinois legislature seeks to redefine fentanyl overdoses as "poisonings."
State Senator Sue Rezin, a Republican from north-central Illinois, says that there's too much "victim-shaming" when it comes to people who die from consuming fentanyl.
"Many people immediately assume that the person who suffered from it was intentionally taking the substance," she said. "But that's not what we're seeing here with fentanyl."
Indeed, many people who die after consuming fentanyl have taken the drug without knowing it. Because it's cheap and relatively easy to produce, dealers use it to cut other drugs, and don't always alert their customers..
Republicans in the legislature want those who sell fentanyl to be held accountable, rather than victims being shamed for consuming the drug.
