Meijer St. Louis expansion before even opening first store?

Meijer hasn't even opened its first area store yet, but has already submitted planning documents which indicate a second location is on the way.

Meijer is a supercenter, like Walmart, selling clothes, electronics, home goods, etc., but with fresh food instead of general merchandise at the center.

The Michigan-based retailer is already under construction in Glen Carbon, and now it is announcing plans to open in O'Fallon, near St. Elizabeth's Hospital.

According to the Business Journal, the land for the 160,000 square foot store is currently owned by Delmar Gardens, which at one point had plans for a Metro East nursing home.

KMOX previously reported on the possibility that Downtown Chesterfield could also be a potential expansion site for Meijer.

"We have a grocery store location in our development and we now have four grocery stores interested in it," developer Michael Staenberg told KMOX, but, of course, "I really am not at liberty to disclose their names."

Privately-held Meijer currently operates around 259 stores throughout the Midwest and had sales last year of nearly $25.5 billion.
