ST. LOUIS (KMOX) - One of the nation's largest school bus companies plans to leave one of the state's largest school districts at the curb.
Missouri Central School Bus Company notified St. Louis Public Schools as well as the Mayor's Office in a letter dated Tuesday it plans to end its contract on June 30th.
Missouri Central is the name of the local branch of North America Central School Bus, which bills itself as the fifth largest school transportation company in the country.
The company is based in Chicago and operates in most Midwestern states. The company says both them and St. Louis Public Schools haven't been able to come to terms on a contract extension.
The school district says the company has been unable to maintain enough drivers to fulfill the contract. The district also claims that last December, despite not meeting performance goals for three-year semesters, Missouri central demanded an additional $2 million from the school district or it would end the contract.
The separation comes over a month after Missouri central drivers also walked off the job in February in response to racially-charged incidents.
Missouri Central says it's laying off more than 300 workers and pulling out of St. Louis.
