Members of the transgender community -- including students and their parents -- say they plan to testify against the bill.

Shira Berkowitz, Senior Director of Policy and Advocacy for PROMO, tells KMOX, Missouri already has policies in place for transgender athletes, "specifically the Missouri High School Athletic Association has already created a set of guidelines that instruct best practices for how to allow or establish that transgender athletes can participate in school sports according to their gender identity."

Berkowitz says says sports teach life lessons, that transgender students should have the same opportunity to experience.

The "Save Women's Sports Act" would apply to middle school, high school and collegiate athletics in Missouri. Supporters contend allowing individuals born as males to compete in women's athletic events creates unfair competition.
