ST. LOUIS (KMOX) - Police say an off-duty officer was shot at on Monday night after honking at a group of people who were blocking the street near a popular St. Louis business. Police believe it's connected to a shooting that left a man shot multiple times in an alley nearby.

St. Louis police say around 10:40 p.m. the officer, described as a 42-year-old black male, was driving his personal vehicle in the 3500 block of Bingham, which is just a block away from the locally famous frozen custard restaurant, Ted Drewes, on South Grand. Police say the officer was forced to stop his car due to other vehicles and people blocking the street.

After the officer honked, several shots were fired behind his vehicle, then he saw a Black male about 18 to 20-years-old shoot at him, police say. The officer was not struck and didn't return fire.

An investigation is underway as police believe the incident is connected to a shooting that happened in the same location about 10 minutes prior.

Police responded to calls for a shooting victim and found a 32-year-old man suffering from multiple gunshot wounds to his lower extremities. Police say he gave them "several inconsistent statements" about what happened.

Police say he told them he was in the area to meet an acquaintance, then heard gunshots and when he went to investigate someone shot him and fled the scene.

The victim was found in an alley and he was transported to a hospital where he was listed in stable condition, police say.
