Yet another Assistant Circuit Attorney has resigned their position from Kim Gardner's office, according to reports from KSDK. That means there are just two left to deal with the office's backlog of criminal cases.
Nick Lake is said to have turned in his resignation, effective April 28. There were 30 Assistant Circuit Attorneys when Gardner took office in 2017.
This would leave just two of the prominent assistants who have been handling high-profile crime cases. There are said to be half a dozen or so other attorneys who are now stepping in to fill the increasing void.
Prior to Lake's departure, another former employee, Natalia A. Ogurkiewicz, announced her resignation from the office on April 14. She wrote in her resignation letter that her workload was "completely untenable," that the structure of the office was insufficient, and that she would "not work for a leader who makes public statements outright calling her attorneys 'negligent' and implying their incompetence."
KSDK reports that the only attorneys left are Srikant Chigurupati and Christopher Desilets, plus one other employee who is on a leave of absence.
Edited 6:23 p.m. 4/21/23 to clarify the focus of those prosecutors who've left in the scope of the overall office.
