Play is a serious strategy at the Magic House

SAINT LOUIS, MO (KMOX) - Anyone who has visited The Magic House knows it's about play. But the absence of traditional play in children's lives has leaders of the institution concerned. That's why the Board of Directors recently approved a new strategic plan with an intentional focus on expanding opportunities for play. "We're seeing that children are coming to school now, not ready to learn because they really don't know how to play and get along together," explains President Beth Fitzgerald.

Fitzgerald says kids aren't engaging with each other and it's causing problems in classrooms.

Over the next three years, The Magic House will bring Play Together to life through a series of initiatives, including:

  • Expand access so more children and families can experience the power of play
  • Create hands-on exhibits, programs, and experiences at The Magic House and in the community that promote children of all backgrounds and abilities playing together
  • Increase awareness of the importance of play through education, storytelling, and outreach
  • Bring free play opportunities to support families with the greatest needs
  • Advocate for play in schools and support educators with play-based tools and resources
  • Build partnerships across our region to expand Play Together opportunities
