ST. LOUIS (KMOX) — A Brooklyn police officer is dead after he was hit by a car while laying spike strips on the McKinley Bridge.

It happened during the 3 a.m. Wednesday during a police chase that started in Brooklyn. Illinois State Police say the suspect's vehicle was later found abandoned in Missouri.

Officers with Illinois State Police, the Madison County Sheriff’s Department, and the Brooklyn Police Department were still on the scene when a gray Kia Optima sped through a roadblock and drove onto the bridge. It hit several police vehicles and narrowly missed several officers.

Police opened fire and hit the driver, causing non-life threatening injuries. The three other occupants of the vehicle were also arrested.
