It started due to a social media threat which spokeswoman Michelle Mueller tells KMOX, police deemed the threat unreliable.

A student made the "unwise decision" to step on a milk carton, which made a popping sound, says Dr. Bruce Green, Director of Secondary Education. Several students ran out and one called police, believing shots had been fired.

Police responded and sounded the all clear.

Green says in light of the social media threat and the uneasy feeling everyone was having, officials called off school for Monday.

In St. Joseph, Missouri there were three juveniles were taken into custody for a social media threat at Central High School. It's unclear if the Ritenour threat was tied to this, however, Dr. Green was aware of similar threats outside of Missouri.
