A rare Bible is now on display at Fontbone University to mark the university's centennial year.

It's the sixth volume of Saint John's Bible -- the first handwritten, hand-illuminated Bible, commissioned by a Benedictine monastery in over 500 years. Fontbonne President Dr. Nancy Blattner explained the Bible's significance.

"The seven volume set is 1,150 pages and there are 160-plus illuminations," she said. "But the sixth volume which comprises the Four Gospels and the Acts of Apostles is the most heavily illuminated of all of the seven volumes."

She added that it's unique visually, too.

"From an artistic perspective, it's the one that's most dazzling, I guess I would say. It's a beautiful, beautiful work of art."

The Bible will be on display until next summer. The public can make an appointment for group or individual tours online at fontbonne.edu/centennial.
